Ahrefs alternatives Reddit recommends (free and cheap)

The short version

  • Starter at $29 a month. Ahrefs' own Starter announcement (September 2024) gives it 200 credits a month, monthly billing only, and no way to buy extra credits.
  • Lite at $129 a month, with 1,000 credits per user, 750 tracked keywords and six months of history.
  • Standard at $249 and Advanced at $449. Enterprise is $1,499 on an annual commitment. Paying yearly saves "up to 17%".
  • A free tier for sites you verify (more on that below).

Reddit's go-to Ahrefs alternatives for backlink data are Bing Webmaster Tools and Google Search Console for your own site, and Majestic or SE Ranking when you need a competitor's links. Experienced commenters add that nothing cheaper matches Ahrefs' link index, so the question becomes whether you need competitor data at all.

On 31 October 2026 we re-read 14 Reddit threads about replacing or paying for Ahrefs. They were posted between August 2021 and October 2026, and five of them were about backlink tools specifically. In those five, Bing Webmaster Tools came up in 10 comments, Search Console in 8, SE Ranking in 3 and Majestic in 2. Those are mentions, not votes. Prices come from each vendor's pricing page on the same day, and where a page showed no price we left it out. We don't sell an SEO suite. The free tools we name are ours, and we say so. Our method is on how we research Reddit.

Why people look for Ahrefs alternatives

People complain about price, credits and data. Ahrefs' paid plans run from $29 to $1,499 a month, and the cheaper plans meter reports with credits. Since Google dropped the setting that let tools pull 100 results per search, users also report far fewer keywords in their reports. Backlink data draws the fewest complaints, which is why people try to keep that part.

Ahrefs' pricing page on 31 October 2026 listed:

  • Starter at $29 a month. Ahrefs' own Starter announcement (September 2024) gives it 200 credits a month, monthly billing only, and no way to buy extra credits.
  • Lite at $129 a month, with 1,000 credits per user, 750 tracked keywords and six months of history.
  • Standard at $249 and Advanced at $449. Enterprise is $1,499 on an annual commitment. Paying yearly saves "up to 17%".
  • A free tier for sites you verify (more on that below).

Small sites start looking elsewhere because of the credit cap. In an August 2026 r/SEO thread, a pre-revenue blogger said they kept hitting Starter's 200-credit cap with light use. Replies split between "batch your lookups and stay" and "drop it until you have revenue". A January 2026 r/seogrowth post was blunter. The poster had had enough of the price rises and the credit system, and wanted backlink data without paying for features they never used.

Most of the data complaints are about keywords. In an August 2026 thread, one user saw 4-5 keywords in Ahrefs for a site they knew ranked for 400-500. An Ahrefs employee had said in an earlier thread that data above about 180 searches a month was being restored. That comes from the vendor itself.

Free options for your own site

You don't need Ahrefs to see the backlinks to your own site. Bing Webmaster Tools and Search Console show the links each search engine knows about, Ahrefs' free tier covers sites you've verified, and free checkers handle DR and link status. You only have to pay when you're studying a site that isn't yours.

  • Bing Webmaster Tools is the free option people name most often in the backlink threads. One r/SEO commenter points out that its backlinks tab lets you compare your site against up to three others. A reply in a January 2026 thread describes the limit well. u/Phouf in r/SEO: "it won't give you an Ahrefs-level competitor backlink profile. It's good for discovery and spot checks, not full exports."
  • The Google Search Console links report shows a smaller list than any third-party tool, but the data comes from Google itself. Our guide to finding backlinks in Search Console walks through it.
  • Ahrefs Webmaster Tools is Ahrefs' free tier. For verified sites, its Site Explorer shows "1K backlinks & keywords visible at once", according to Ahrefs' free page on 31 October 2026.
  • With our free DR checker you can check any domain's rating without an account. It runs on Open PageRank data on a 0-100 scale, so the number won't match Ahrefs' own DR. Use it to compare sites and track changes over time. The free Ahrefs alternative page explains the trade-off.
  • Our free backlink monitor is for checking that links you built still exist. Paste up to 20 linking pages and it shows whether each link is live, whether it's dofollow or nofollow, and its anchor text.

If the free tools show you don't have enough links, the next step is getting more, and you don't need a paid tool for that either. Of the 1,289 directories in our database, 681 give a dofollow link and 557 are both free and dofollow (counted 30 October 2026, full breakdown here).

On a budget, Reddit points to three main options for competitor backlinks: Majestic if you only need link data, SE Ranking if you want a cheaper suite that still does backlink research, and Ahrefs' own $29 Starter plan for occasional checks. Mangools' LinkMiner and Moz Link Explorer come up too. Every one of them has a smaller index than Ahrefs.

Experienced users speak most warmly about Majestic. When someone in r/SEO asked for a backlink checker besides Semrush and Ahrefs, u/SEOPub named Majestic and said its metrics are the best of the third-party scores, even though they don't love any of them. Our cheap Ahrefs alternative page and the longer Ahrefs alternatives list sort these tools by job.

What you lose when you switch

You give up index size and freshness. Commenters say Ahrefs has a bigger, fresher index than the cheaper tools, so a competitor's newer links are more likely to show up there. They also say no tool sees every link, which is why some people check one domain in two or three tools.

The clearest summary came from the September 2026 backlink-checker thread. u/kemalios in r/SEO: "Ahrefs and Semrush are selling coverage and freshness, and building that is expensive." The same comment says the free sources are enough if you only watch one domain, and that nothing smaller comes close if you need to find new backlinks at scale.

Two habits from the threads help with the gap:

  • Expect the numbers to differ. Each tool reports the links its own crawler found, so the same domain gets a different count, DR or DA in each one. Don't compare a score from one tool with a score from another.
  • Cross-check a number before you trust it. In an October 2026 thread, the Loganix account (a link-building vendor) suggested running a domain through Majestic and Moz alongside Ahrefs and looking where they disagree. The advice is sound, though the source sells links.

Is Ahrefs worth it, and for whom

Ahrefs is worth it if you research competitors' backlinks every week, which covers link builders, agencies and anyone pitching link prospects. If you run one site or don't have revenue yet, most Redditors say the free tools are enough and you can buy a month of Ahrefs when a specific project needs it.

The most honest answer we found was in a December 2025 thread, where u/glucosesimp wrote in r/SEO: "Am i satisfied for the price paid? No. Is there something better? Also no." Another commenter in the same thread used Ahrefs for backlinks and competitor gaps but kept Search Console as the source of truth for their own site.

How that sorts out:

  • Pay for Ahrefs if competitor backlink research is your job. Our Ahrefs vs Semrush comparison covers which suite fits.
  • Try SE Ranking if you want a cheaper suite and can live with lighter link data. See Ahrefs vs SE Ranking.
  • Buy one month when a project needs it. One r/WebsiteSEO commenter does this with the Starter plan.
  • Stay free if you work on one site, using Bing Webmaster Tools, Search Console and a free DR checker.

The wider tool list is in the best SEO tools according to Reddit. If you came here looking to replace Semrush rather than Ahrefs, read Semrush alternatives Reddit recommends.

Want these links without the spreadsheet?

From $49 a month, the agent finds and pitches the pages already ranking for your keywords. Or we submit you to 100+ directories by hand, from $99 once. Either way, you approve everything.
