The short version
- Keep Semrush if you run an agency, need content and PPC data in one place, and use most of the tool.
- Switch to SE Ranking if you want one cheaper suite and can live with lighter backlink data. Our Ahrefs vs SE Ranking comparison covers the trade-offs.
- Switch to Ahrefs if competitor backlinks matter more to you than content and PPC. See Ahrefs vs Semrush.

Reddit's most-named Semrush alternative is SE Ranking, but the most common answer is a cheaper setup rather than a cheaper suite: Google Search Console and Keyword Planner for your own site, plus a pay-per-use data tool such as OpenSEO or DataForSEO for competitors. People who need deep competitor research tend to move to Ahrefs or stay put.
On 31 October 2026 we re-read 12 r/SEO, r/seogrowth and r/GrowthHacking threads about replacing Semrush, posted between April 2024 and October 2026, and counted which tools commenters named. SE Ranking came up in 8 of the 12 threads, and OpenSEO and DataForSEO in 5 each. A mention count is not a vote, and several of the OpenSEO mentions come from its own creator. Every price below comes from the vendor's pricing page on the same day. We sell link building, not an SEO suite. How we research Reddit covers the method.

Why people are leaving Semrush
Price is the reason most threads give, with upsells and cancellation trouble close behind. Starter went from $139 to $199 a month in early 2026. Users say the AI features cost extra per site, and Adobe bought the company. The second complaint is data accuracy: for their own site, many users trust Search Console over Semrush's estimates.
Most people point to the February 2026 thread about Starter going from $139 to $199. One reply there captured the mood. u/ProperCelery7430 in r/SEO: "their pricing model and constant upselling of other products is very disappointing and too expensive for most freelancers / small businesses."
The $199 figure needs context. On 31 October 2026, Semrush's pricing page still listed an SEO plan at $139 a month. Starter at $199 is the bundle that adds AI visibility, and Pro+ is $299. Yearly billing brings those down to $117.33, $165.17 and $248.17 a month. The page also lists a free plan and a seven-day trial.
Two other threads keep the complaint alive. In a July 2026 thread asking whether Semrush still does anything, a seven-year user said none of the AI features came without an extra fee per site and that they planned to switch before the year was out. An April 2026 post described being charged $211 after cancelling a trial because there was also a confirmation email to click. That's one user's account, though several replies said it had happened to them too. If you start a trial, finish every cancellation step, the email included.
The alternatives by budget
The cheapest setup that works is free: Search Console, Keyword Planner and Bing Webmaster Tools. One step up, Reddit names pay-per-use tools (OpenSEO, raw DataForSEO) for light use and SE Ranking as the cheaper full suite. Ahrefs comes up too, but people switch to it for better link data, not to save money.
| Budget | What Redditors name | Price (vendor page, 31 Oct 2026) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| $0 | Google Search Console, Keyword Planner, Bing Webmaster Tools | Free | Your own site's queries, volumes and links |
| Pay per use | DataForSEO (via Claude or your own scripts) | Billed per request | People comfortable with an API |
| About $10 a month | OpenSEO (open source, built on DataForSEO) | Base $10/mo incl. $10 of usage, Pro $30/mo | Light keyword and rank checks |
| Around $50 a month | Majestic | Lite $49.99/mo | Backlink data only |
| Around $100-130 a month | SE Ranking | Core $129/mo, or $103.20/mo billed yearly | A cheaper all-in-one with backlinks included |
| Same tier as Semrush | Ahrefs | Lite $129/mo, Standard $249/mo | Better backlink and competitor data |
Mangools and Ubersuggest also come up as easy, low-cost picks for small sites. Neither pricing page showed plan prices when we loaded it on 31 October, so check them yourself before you buy.
One warning about these threads. An r/seogrowth commenter pointed out that "what's a Semrush alternative?" posts attract vendors, and the top-voted answer is sometimes an ad. We saw the same thing. The OpenSEO creator, u/theben9999, recommends it in two of the threads we read, and other replies name tools without saying whether they built them.
What you lose when you switch
You mostly give up breadth and polish. SE Ranking users say its backlink data is thinner than Semrush or Ahrefs, OpenSEO is only months old, and the free stack has no competitor data at all. Rebuilding your reports also takes time, and that is where some switchers gave up.
The clearest warning comes from a May 2026 r/GrowthHacking post by someone who tried four Semrush alternatives over a quarter and renewed Semrush. For their work, Ahrefs' keyword data was thinner, SE Ranking was cheaper but missing backlinks, and SpyFu couldn't track local pack rankings. Moving client reports in the middle of the migration nearly cost them their biggest account.
Before you cancel, list the three or four reports you open every week and check that each one exists in the new tool. Most of the regret stories start with a missing report found after the switch.
Free ways to do the backlink part
For your own site, Bing Webmaster Tools and Search Console both show backlinks for free, from each search engine's own data. A free DR checker covers a quick authority check on any domain. A paid index only earns its cost when you want to dig into competitors' links.
Bing Webmaster Tools comes up most often here. Its backlinks report covers your own site, and a commenter in an r/SEO thread on backlink checkers says you can add up to three other sites to compare against. Search Console's links report is smaller, but the data comes straight from Google. Our free DR checker runs on Open PageRank data and rates any domain from 0 to 100 without an account. The free Semrush alternative page pairs it with our 1,289-directory database, where 681 directories give a dofollow link (counted on 30 October 2026).
If you mostly used Semrush for backlinks, our page on Ahrefs alternatives Reddit recommends goes further into the link side, and free Ahrefs alternative covers the DR check.
Is Semrush still worth it, and who for
If you research competitors' keywords for clients and also run content or PPC, Semrush is still worth paying for, because that is where it does more than its rivals. For a single site, most Redditors say the free Google tools plus one cheaper data source cover what you need.
u/SEOPub in r/SEO was replying to someone whose manager had asked them to find an alternative. The answer: if you only report on your own site, Semrush "was not the right tool in the first place." The same commenter still uses it for market and competitor research. Another commenter described the middle path plainly. u/k4rm1c in r/seogrowth: "No point paying $100+ a month just to use 15% of a tool."
So the split looks like this:
- Keep Semrush if you run an agency, need content and PPC data in one place, and use most of the tool.
- Switch to SE Ranking if you want one cheaper suite and can live with lighter backlink data. Our Ahrefs vs SE Ranking comparison covers the trade-offs.
- Switch to Ahrefs if competitor backlinks matter more to you than content and PPC. See Ahrefs vs Semrush.
- Drop paid tools if you work on one site. Use Search Console and Keyword Planner, and pay per lookup when you need competitor data.
If you're weighing a budget suite, our Semrush vs Ubersuggest post covers that pairing, and the best SEO tools according to Reddit sorts the wider field by job.
