The short version
- Semrush has a free plan at $0 and a seven-day trial of its paid plans. One commenter said the free account is now limited to around 10 lookups a day.
- SE Ranking offers a 14-day free trial.
- Ahrefs has a free tier that includes Ahrefs Webmaster Tools for sites you own, plus free keyword tools on its site.
- Ubersuggest gives you a limited number of free searches. The student in that thread said it asked them to upgrade after about three.

Reddit's free SEO stack is Google Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools, GA4, Google Keyword Planner and the free version of Screaming Frog. Together they cover your own rankings, indexing, traffic, search volumes and technical problems at no cost. You only need a paid tool once you start researching competitors.
To check this, we re-read eight threads from r/SEO, r/bigseo and r/SEO_Xpert on 31 October 2026. The oldest is from October 2023 and still ranks on Google for "best free SEO tools". The newest, from August and September 2026, give the same answer, so the free stack hasn't changed in three years. On the same day we checked every free limit below against the vendor's own site. The full method is on how we research Reddit.
Last checked: 31 October 2026.
Your own site (Search Console, Bing Webmaster, GA4)
For your own site, Reddit names Google Search Console first in nearly every thread. It shows the real queries, clicks, impressions and indexing problems straight from Google. Bing Webmaster Tools adds Bing's view plus a free backlinks report, and GA4 tells you which visits turn into signups or sales.
In an August 2026 thread asking for the best free SEO tool, most of the top answers were just "Google Search Console". One reply explains why people stop looking. u/DirectionFrosty518 in r/SEO_Xpert: "honestly gsc has basically been it for me".
Three free additions come up often enough to list:
- Microsoft Clarity gives you session recordings and heatmaps, and both 2026 threads named it alongside GA4.
- Looker Studio builds free dashboards on top of Search Console and GA4 data, which helps if you report to a boss or a client.
- Bing Webmaster Tools also has its own keyword research, backlink and site health reports. u/WebLinkr, an r/SEO moderator, lists them in a 2025 free-tools thread, and says elsewhere that the keyword research is the weak part.
A habit worth copying from r/bigseo: in Search Console, compare impressions and clicks across two date ranges to find pages that are slipping. It's free, and it catches drops before a paid tool would.
Crawling (Screaming Frog free, 500 URLs)
On Reddit, the default free crawler is Screaming Frog SEO Spider. The free version crawls up to 500 URLs, which covers most small business and SaaS sites, and it finds broken links, redirect chains, missing titles and duplicate pages. Past 500 URLs you need the paid licence.
We checked Screaming Frog's pricing page on 31 October 2026. The free version's crawl limit is 500 URLs, and a licence costs £199 a year. In the 2023 thread that still ranks for this topic, Screaming Frog is the second most-upvoted answer, and it shows up in almost every free-tools thread since.
The threads add two cautions. First, the interface takes time to learn, so beginners in r/SEO get pointed to Sitebulb (paid), which explains each problem. Second, the "SEO site audit" score itself gets little respect. One r/SEO moderator calls it the biggest scam in SEO, because fixing small HTML warnings rarely moves rankings. Use the crawler to find what's broken and ignore the score.
For single pages, browser extensions fill the gap. The Detailed SEO Extension and Chrome's own developer tools come up in the 2025 and 2026 threads for checking titles, headings and schema one page at a time.
Keywords (Keyword Planner and free tiers)
Google Keyword Planner is the free keyword tool Reddit trusts most, because its volumes come from Google. It needs a Google Ads account, but you don't have to run ads. For ideas and trends, add Google Trends and AnswerThePublic, and go easy on the free tiers and trials of paid tools.
In September 2026 a student asked for a truly free keyword tool for one assignment, and the top answer was Keyword Planner. u/BigLeagueBlogs in r/SEO: "You have to set up an account and link a credit card but you won't have to pay anything."
Here are the free tiers of paid tools as we found them on 31 October 2026:
- Semrush has a free plan at $0 and a seven-day trial of its paid plans. One commenter said the free account is now limited to around 10 lookups a day.
- SE Ranking offers a 14-day free trial.
- Ahrefs has a free tier that includes Ahrefs Webmaster Tools for sites you own, plus free keyword tools on its site.
- Ubersuggest gives you a limited number of free searches. The student in that thread said it asked them to upgrade after about three.
If you start a paid trial, set a reminder to cancel before it renews. Our guide to the best SEO tools on Reddit covers the complaints about cancelling trials in detail.
Backlinks (Bing Webmaster, our backlink monitor and DR checker)
For backlinks, Reddit's free answer is Bing Webmaster Tools, which reports links for any domain, plus Search Console's links report for your own site. Neither gives you a big third-party index like Ahrefs or Majestic. We built free tools for checking specific links and a site's authority.
In a 2025 thread asking for affordable SEO tools, an r/SEO moderator answered the backlink question with Bing Webmaster Tools and said its free backlink checker is clearer than Semrush's. Ahrefs Webmaster Tools also shows backlinks for sites you've verified you own.
Here is what our free tools add, and what they don't:
- Backlink monitor: paste up to 20 pages that should link to you. It checks whether each link is live, whether it's dofollow or nofollow, and what its anchor text is. It won't discover new links. It checks the ones you already know about, like links you paid for or earned through outreach.
- DR checker: one site's Domain Rating, so you can judge a site before you pitch it.
- Bulk DR checker: DR and referring domains for up to 100 sites at once, for sorting a prospect list.
- Domain rating reports: a page per domain with its DR history.
Regulars in r/SEO call DR and DA "third party vanity metrics", and they're right that Google doesn't use them. They're still a quick way to sort a list of 100 sites before you look at each one properly.
The rest of our free tools are on /tools.
Where free stops being enough
Free tools run out when you need data about sites you don't own: competitors' keywords, their full backlink profiles, and ranking history across many sites. Paid suites exist for that work. If you only work on your own site, many Redditors say you may never need one.
Signs you've outgrown the free stack:
- You need to see which keywords a competitor ranks for.
- You need a competitor's full backlink list to find gaps.
- You track rankings for several sites or many keywords every week.
- You crawl sites larger than 500 URLs.
For the first three, read the best SEO tools according to Reddit to see which suite fits which job, and Semrush alternatives Reddit recommends if price is what's stopping you. For the fourth, the Screaming Frog licence is the cheapest fix on the list.
