    Generative Engine Optimization

Optimising your content to be surfaced and cited by AI-powered answer engines like ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, and Perplexity — the AI-era counterpart to traditional SEO.

Generative Engine Optimization, or GEO, is the practice of shaping your content so that AI answer engines mention, cite, and recommend it. As people increasingly ask tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google's AI Overviews, and Gemini instead of scrolling a list of blue links, being the source an AI draws from becomes a new form of visibility. GEO overlaps with SEO but shifts the emphasis. Instead of only ranking a page, you want your information to be easy for a model to extract and trust: clear, well-structured content; direct answers to specific questions; factual accuracy; and strong signals of expertise and authority. Being widely mentioned across reputable sites also helps, because models pick up on brands and sources that appear often and in trustworthy contexts. Practical GEO tactics include writing concise, quotable passages, using descriptive headings and structured data, keeping facts current, and earning citations and brand mentions across the web. The underlying goal mirrors classic SEO — be genuinely useful and authoritative — but the audience now includes AI systems deciding which sources to surface.
