The short version
- If you're a founder writing your own content, use Frase or Surfer for drafts, plus Otterly.ai Lite to see whether AI answers mention you. That stays under $100 a month.
- A content team should use Clearscope for briefs and Semrush or SE Ranking for keywords and AI tracking.
- An agency can run SE Ranking or Semrush across clients, and add Alli AI if developer time is the bottleneck.
- If your pages are already good but nobody links to them, you need a link building tool or agent. Content tools can't fix that. See our best link building tools.

The best AI SEO tools in 2026 are Surfer, Clearscope or Frase for writing and optimizing content, Otterly.ai, Semrush or SE Ranking for tracking whether ChatGPT and Google's AI answers mention you, and an agent such as BacklinkBot for the outreach that earns links. AI does the research, drafting and monitoring well. A person still has to decide what to publish, check every claim, and handle the parts that need someone else to say yes.
That answers a question that keeps coming up on r/seogrowth about which AI-powered SEO platforms actually deliver measurable growth and how much human work they still need. No AI SEO tool does all of SEO. Each one below does one job, so the question to ask is which job you need done.
Last checked: 30 October 2026. Every price comes from the vendor's own pricing page on that date. We did not run trial accounts, so you won't find test results or traffic claims here. BacklinkBot is our product and is held to the same standard.

What to ask any AI SEO tool before you pay
A thread in r/b2bmarketing about AI SEO agencies came up with a checklist that applies to software too:
"they should be able to show: query set, model coverage, citation sources, brand sentiment in answers, and before/after movement." (u/Worth_Influence_7324, r/b2bmarketing)
With an AI visibility tool, ask which prompts it tracks, which AI engines it checks, how often it checks them, and whether it shows the sources the AI cited. With a content tool, ask what the score is based on and whether you can see the pages it compared you against.
AI content optimization tools
These tools read the pages ranking for a keyword, show which topics and terms your draft is missing, and can write a first draft with AI.
Surfer
Surfer scores your draft against the pages that rank. It also writes AI drafts, audits existing pages and, on most plans, tracks AI search prompts.
Prices billed yearly on surfer.ai/pricing: Discovery $49/month, Standard $99/month (25 AI prompts tracked weekly), Pro $182/month (50 prompts daily), Peace of Mind $299/month, and a standalone AI Search Analytics plan at $82/month. Billed monthly, it costs up to 17% more.
Good for: writers and small teams who want one score to edit toward. The catch: if you chase a content score, you can end up with a page that looks like everything else on page one.
Clearscope
Clearscope began as a content-brief tool. It now pairs briefs with AI tracking across ChatGPT and Gemini.
On clearscope.io/pricing: Essentials $129/month (50 tracked queries, 20 monthly drafts), Business $399/month, Enterprise custom, with a 14-day free trial.
Good for: content teams handing briefs to writers. The catch: that entry price is a lot for one person publishing a few posts a month.
Frase
Frase covers research, briefs, AI writing, page audits and AI visibility tracking on ChatGPT and Google AI.
On frase.io/pricing: Starter $49/month ($39 billed annually, 1 site, 10 articles a month), Professional $129/month, Scale $299/month, with a 7-day trial and no card required.
Good for: solo founders who want briefs and drafts in one cheap tool. The catch: you'll hit the Starter limits (one site, 10 articles a month) fast.
MarketMuse
MarketMuse plans content around topics: what you already cover, what you're missing and what to write next.
MarketMuse's pricing page lists a free plan (10 queries a month) plus paid Optimize, Research and Strategy plans, but shows no prices. To get one, you book a demo.
Good for: content strategists planning a whole site. The catch: there's no public price, and the free plan is small.
AI search visibility tools
These tools send a set of prompts to ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google's AI Overviews and others, then report whether your brand shows up and which sources each answer cited.
Otterly.ai
Otterly.ai tracks brand mentions and cited sources across ChatGPT, Gemini, AI Overviews, AI Mode, Perplexity and Copilot.
On otterly.ai/pricing: Lite $29/month (15 prompts), Standard $189/month (100 prompts), Premium $489/month (400 prompts), with a free trial.
Good for: a cheap first look at whether AI answers mention you. The catch: 15 prompts is a small sample, so choose them carefully.
Semrush
Semrush now sells SEO and AI search tracking together.
On semrush.com/prices: the SEO plan is $139/month, Starter (SEO + AI Search) is $199/month ($165.17 billed annually), and Pro+ is $299/month. The free plan includes some AI visibility features, and there is a 7-day trial.
Good for: teams already using Semrush for keywords. The catch: you pay for a full SEO suite to get the AI tracking.
SE Ranking
SE Ranking bundles rank tracking, audits and AI visibility.
On seranking.com: Core is $129/month ($103.20 billed annually) and Growth is $279/month. Both include AI visibility tracking with 25 prompts a day across 5 AI engines, and extra prompts are an add-on from $71/month. The 14-day trial needs no card.
Good for: agencies and small teams who want an all-in-one that costs less than Semrush. The catch: 25 prompts a day is a starter allowance.
Ahrefs Brand Radar
Ahrefs sells AI visibility as Brand Radar, an add-on from $199/month on top of a paid plan (Starter is $29/month), per ahrefs.com/pricing. Its AI content kit is listed as "soon".
Good for: teams already on Ahrefs for backlinks. The catch: because it's an add-on, the total gets high.
Profound
Profound tracks how brands appear across up to nine answer engines, and it includes an AI assistant for marketing work. Per tryprofound.com/pricing, there is a free 7-day trial, and enterprise pricing is on request.
Good for: larger brands with a budget. The catch: no public price beyond the trial.
Technical SEO automation
Alli AI
Alli AI serves pre-rendered pages to AI crawlers and search engines. It also pushes bulk technical and on-page changes through a plugin or script, so you don't have to rebuild the site.
According to alliai.com/pricing, Business costs $299/month ($249 billed annually) and Agency costs $599/month. Both come with a 10-day free trial.
Good for: agencies managing many sites with slow developer queues. The catch: a script injects the changes, so you depend on it staying installed, and you should still check what it changed.
AI for link building
Most AI SEO tools stop at your own site. Few touch links, because a link still needs someone else to agree. The ones that do are mostly outreach agents, which we cover in more detail in best AI backlink tools and what is an SEO agent.
BacklinkBot (our product)
BacklinkBot's SEO agent reads your site, pulls the pages already ranking for your keywords and scores each one, showing the reasons. It finds the person behind each page, drafts a pitch about that page, and sends it from your inbox once you approve. Then it follows up and checks that the link went live. Our AI backlink outreach page describes the outreach workflow.
Starter is $49/month ($19 for the first month on a new account, 1 site), Pro is $99/month (3 sites) and Growth is $199/month (10 sites). There is no free plan.
Good for: founders who know they need links and never get around to outreach. The catch: it only does link building. It doesn't write content or track AI answers. It's also newer than the other tools here, so we can't yet point to a long record of won links.

How to choose the best AI SEO stack
- If you're a founder writing your own content, use Frase or Surfer for drafts, plus Otterly.ai Lite to see whether AI answers mention you. That stays under $100 a month.
- A content team should use Clearscope for briefs and Semrush or SE Ranking for keywords and AI tracking.
- An agency can run SE Ranking or Semrush across clients, and add Alli AI if developer time is the bottleneck.
- If your pages are already good but nobody links to them, you need a link building tool or agent. Content tools can't fix that. See our best link building tools.
Whatever you pick, keep a person on the parts that carry risk: facts, claims about your product, and anything sent to another human.
FAQ
What are the best AI SEO tools for beginners?
Frase and Surfer are the cheapest way into AI-assisted content, both starting at $49/month. Otterly.ai Lite, at $29/month, shows whether AI answers mention you. Start with one content tool and add tracking once you have pages worth tracking.
Can AI SEO tools replace an SEO person?
Not fully. They speed up research, briefs, drafts and monitoring, but someone still has to choose topics, check facts, decide what gets published and build the relationships that earn links.
What is the best AI SEO tool for showing up in ChatGPT?
The tracking tools (Otterly.ai, Semrush, SE Ranking, Ahrefs Brand Radar, Profound) tell you whether you appear and which sources get cited. Showing up usually means getting mentioned on those cited pages. That is link building and PR work, not a setting you switch on in a tool.
Are AI-written SEO articles safe?
Google's guidance targets low-value content made mainly to rank, however it is produced. An AI draft that a person edits, fact-checks and adds real experience to is fine. The risky pattern is publishing unedited AI drafts at scale.
Pair your content tool with links
Most of these tools work on what's already on your site. Rankings and AI citations also depend on who links to you. If outreach is the job that keeps slipping, BacklinkBot's SEO agent finds the pages ranking for your keywords and drafts the pitches. You approve each send. It starts at $49/month.
Want these links without the spreadsheet?
From $49 a month, the agent finds and pitches the pages already ranking for your keywords. Or we submit you to 100+ directories by hand, from $99 once. Either way, you approve everything.
