Mine Google Search Console for Quick Wins

Before you publish a single new page, look at what you already rank for. Google Search Console (GSC) is free, and it's the most underused growth tool most founders own. The pattern is simple: find pages ranking on positions 3–24, then push them up. Moving from position 8 to 3 can triple a page's clicks — and it's far easier than ranking something new from scratch.

Set up the one report that matters

In GSC → Performance → Search results, enable both Average position and Total clicks, then:

  1. Set the date range to the last 3 months.
  2. Sort by Impressions (where you're being seen, even if not clicked).
  3. Add a filter: Position between 3 and 20.

That list is your to-do list. Every row is a keyword Google already trusts you for, but where you're leaving clicks on the table.

The three quick-win plays

1. Striking distance (positions 5–15). These pages are one good edit away from page-one prominence. Improve the title to match the exact query, add a section that directly answers it, refresh the publish date, and add 2–3 internal links from your strongest pages. Re-request indexing.

2. The "almost ranking" content gap. Filter for queries with high impressions but a position past 10 and no dedicated page. That's Google telling you "people want this from you, but you don't have the right page." Build it.

3. Title/CTR mismatch. Sort by impressions, look for rows with a position under 10 but a low click-through rate. The ranking is fine — the title and meta description aren't compelling. Rewrite them to promise the exact answer. This is the single fastest lever in SEO: same ranking, more clicks, zero new content.

The query-not-page mindset

Don't think in pages — think in queries. One page can rank for dozens of variations. In GSC, click into a single page (Pages tab → URL) and view its queries. You'll often find a keyword you never targeted that's quietly driving impressions. Lean into it: add a heading and a paragraph that nails that exact phrasing, and you frequently jump several positions.

Cadence

Make this a monthly ritual, not a one-time audit:

  • Week 1: export the 3–20 position report.
  • Weeks 2–4: improve 3–5 pages — titles, answers, internal links.
  • Track the position change next month. Compounded over a year, this alone can double organic clicks for most small sites.

Pair it with the rest of the playbook

GSC tells you what's working; the conversion-page method (Chapter 1) tells you what to build next. Use them together: when GSC shows a buyer-intent query you're ranking 12th for, that's your highest-priority page to build or improve. Everything downstream — links, AI citations — compounds on top of a page Google already half-trusts.
